What is colonic hydrotherapy

Colonic hydrotherapy is not a cure-all, but an important complimentary therapy in the overall healthcare of the client. A standard Colonic Hydrotherapy enema involves the injection of water (one way) into the colon, which is retained and evacuated by the patient. Colonic hydrotherapy is instrument controlled continual bathing of the colon for cleansing and therapeutic purposes. Intestinal cleansing is a therapeutic measure which addresses the cause or source of the problem.

The bran revolution in perspective

In 1972, a British doctor, Dr Dennis Burkitt, began to publicise his theory that constipation, caused by lack of fibre in the diet, went on to be a factor in diverticulitis - a form of colonic inflammation and even led to cancer of the bowel.
Around the same time, commander T.L. Cleave, a surgeon, suggested that the low-fibre diet served upto seamen caused constipation - the biggest health problem in the Royal Navy and that this could b a precursor of varicose veins and haemorrhoids.
As a result of all the publicity, bran became almost an obsession with some people. Unfortunately excessive consumption of bran can cause problems such as abdominal bloating and flatulence. Bran contains a substance called phytic acic which inhibits the body's absorbtion of certain minerals, especially iron, to the extent that lare intakes ofbran can contribute to amenia.

Five steps to kick start your bowel

IStock_000004545624XSmall Ensure that your intake of fibre is high, because fibre in the presence of water forms a soft stool which stimulates the gut to contract.

Make sure you aim to drink at lest two litres of water a day to assist the fibre in your food to stimulate the gut.

Although small doses of caffeine stimulates the small muscles of the intestine to contract ( which can help to alleviate short term constipation) too much can dehydrate the body making the problem worse. two to three cups a day should be the maximum.

The Open System

This method of hydrotherapy is a modification associated with the German machine known as the Colon Hydrostat.

The brand new machine is called the Aggi named after the designer Alan Gray. The machine is able to offer both methods of delivery but the open system is becoming more and more popular with clients.

How is IBS diagnosed

Normally IBS is diagnosed after a process of elimination, that is to say that other disorders that may have the same or similar symptoms will be ruled out first by blood tests, stool samples, medical history, physical examination etc.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Over the years IBS has been known by a variety of different names, spastic colon, nervous diarrhoea, functional dyspepsia, but whatever the name it is still one of the most common diagnosis's and in a US study it was found that an estimated one in five Americans suffer from it. Incidentally although twice as many women than men may suffer from the disease, ninty percent of men never consult a doctor.

Colonic Hydrotherapy described

Colonic Hydrotherapy could be described as a type of enema only 40 times more powerful in its effectiveness at cleansing the colon. The procedure sends warmed sterile water into your lower bowel and colon to assist in the cleansing of what can be in some cases years of pollutants, toxic substances, residue medications and of course mucous gas and faecal matter.
