Lack of sunshine and obesity link

Sunset_over_shat_al_arabResearches at Aberdeen university studied over three thousand women in Scotland and concluded that a lack of vitamin D caused by a lack of sunshine could be the reason why so many people in Scotland are obese. Those with a body mass index of thirty four produced ten percent less vitamin D compared with those of average weight.

Super healthy fruit

A new super healthy fruit known as the Baobab will soon be marketed in the UK thanks to clearing from EU ruling authorities.

Originating from Africa this fruit contains, six times the vitamin C of an orange and twice as calcium that is in milk, also containing potassium, iron and antioxidants.

The shell of this fruit is too hard to crack so it will be marketed as an ingredient in cereal bars and smoothies. Sales of this product will also help more than two and a half million of the poorest families in southern Africa.

Pregnancy and childcare

Fotolia_3108051_sA report from the home office concerning women drug users shows that Over ninety percent of women drug users presenting to services are of childbearing age (Clarke and Formby 2000). Drug use is associated with direct and indirect complications throughout pregnancy, postnatal morbidity and developmental delays (Hunter and Powis 1996). Heavy use of certain drugs during pregnancy (eg alcohol, tobacco, tranquillisers, heroin and other opiates) can lead to premature birth, low birth weight and increased risk of losing the baby around the time of birth.

Some women problem drug users will have childcare responsibilities. These women may find it difficult to balance such responsibilities with their drug use, and this may lead to childcare, parenting and child protection problems (Dunlap et al 1997).
As most drugs used in childbirth are morphine based, it is important for those pregnant women that are no longer drug users to have access to the necessary tools which will enable them to give birth through natural means with no drug intervention and with out the worry that they may become re-addicted. Through the use of complimentary childbirth techniques this is possible……. See complimentary childbirth clinic.

The truth about additives

A newspaper report claims that the number of children with a hyperactive disorder could be reduced by a third if suspect food additives are removed from our foods.
This fact was researched and highlighted twenty years ago but the government have been slow to act - having detrimental effects on the health, behaviour and academic performance of our children.

Then report will put pressure on the food standards agency to ban food manufactures from using dangerous E numbers - used largely in sweets, soft drinks, ice cream and cakes - foods often fed to our children.

Can we trust what we are buying?

A report in the daily mail highlights the food fraud that we are exposed to. It appears food labelling is not as accurate as it should be and consumers are being led to believe they are buying better quality foods than they actually are. This problem is apparent in as much as 10% of the food we are buying and eating in restaurants.
Foods most at risk of fraud labelling are high-value foods such as wild salmon, free range chicken and eggs, extra virgin olive oil and even alcohol. These products can have damaging health implications. E.g. they may contain high levels of methanol which can cause blindness and even death in extreme cases.

At a time when we are being encouraged to focus on our diet and health, it appears the food manufacturers are more interested in financial profit than the health of the customers.
The Food Standard’s Agency is targeting this problem but perhaps the public should also be putting pressure on supermarkets to audit the quality of their food products and ensure we are buying what the label promises.

Can my diet affect baby’s sex?

Istock_000004085334xsmallMany parents would love to choose the sex of their baby but can their diet influence this choice? A recent poll revealed four out of ten couples would pay £1000 for this opportunity.

Many theories have been put forward over the years including studies suggesting a diet high in potassium and sodium, including vegetables, bananas, fish and meat may increase the chance of having a boy. To increase the chances of having a girl opt for foods high in calcium and magnesium such as milk, beans, cereals, cheese and nuts.

However, such evidence is limited and the main aim is to eat a diet that will prepare the body for a healthy pregnancy, birth and baby.

Links to Cancer

Experts from the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) have analysed over 7000 research studies looking at the link between diet, lifestyle and exercise and the risk of developing cancer. In order to minimise the risk of developing cancer they recommend:

• Maintain a healthy weight by avoiding foods high in saturated fat, sugar and fizzy drinks
• Avoid processed foods and eat mainly plant based foods such as fruit, vegetables, pulses and wholegrains
• Limit consumption of red meat to 1 lb/week. Avoid processed meats such as sausages, ham, pate, bacon
• Limit alcohol intake. 1 unit/day for women and 2 units/day for men
• Avoid foods high in salt and limit daily intake to 6g
• Choose good quality foods to supply vitamins and minerals rather than relying on supplements

Dangers of Alcohol in Pregnancy

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is a condition in newborn babies resulting from heavy alcohol intake during pregnancy.

It is now believed to be directly linked to antisocial behaviour amongst children and young people.

Alcohol crosses the placenta and damages brain development in the unborn child leading to conditions such as ADHD, hyperactivity, learning disabilities and poor social behaviour.
With binge drinking becoming increasingly popular in our society this risk has the potential to increase dramatically.

Junk food marketing and the affect on our children

BigmacAdvertising of junk food is making it difficult for parents to choose healthy foods to feed their children.
It appears the government are not doing enough to control the marketing of junk foods. This is having an adverse effect on child health.

we are seeing a huge increase in childhood obesity, diabetes, heart disease, tooth decay, poor mental performance and antisocial behaviour.

not only are unhealthy foods promoted on TV but also on the internet and via text messaging.

In order to help this growing problem more pressure needs to be placed on the government to curb this advertising.

Can tai chi chuan help my diabetes

A recent research team have been able to observe a significant improvement in the causative factors associated in Type 2 Diabetes.

This improvement came with an introduction of gentle exercise in the form of Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese practise.

A significant reduction in the production of glycated haemoglobin ( produced when excess blood sugar combines with the oxygen transporter in red blood cells.) was demonstrated after a 12 week programme of Tai Chi was attended .

There was also an improvement of immune response and a reduction in immune suppression.

Tai Chi chuan combines deep breathing and relaxation with gentle movement.

This is a brilliant demonstration of how introduction of of relaxation techniques can have a significant impact on your health.

Fit or Fat – what are we feeding our children?

The current rise in obesity is not only affecting the adult population but also children – our future generation.
Parents are predominantly responsible for ensuring children receive well-balanced, nourishing diets but their choice is often easily influenced by the media - advertising fast, convenient foods – often high in saturated fat, salt and sugar.

The other major input into a child’s diet is the school canteen. The recent work of Jamie Oliver has done much to improve school dinners – swapping ready made foods of poor nutritional value e.g. chicken nuggets /beefburgers/chips – for the home made equivalent, baked potatoes, vegetables and fruit.

However, as highlighted by the BBC last week both parents and schools are fighting against the many take-aways, fast food outlets and sweetshops located near schools with tourist areas and inner cities faring the worst. Many pupils are opting to spend their dinner money in these unhealthy venues with dangerous consequences – notably an increase in obesity, diabetes, poor academic performance, early heart disease and dental disease.

Drug firms profit

The drug firm Galxosmithkline is under scrutiny by not researching the drug Seroxat a drug linked to a very high suicide rate in its users. The drug firm were accused of not releasing the information earlier.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) received data from clinical trials in May 2003 showing that patients under 18 had a higher risk of suicidal behaviour if they were treated with Seroxat than if they received a placebo. This company has profited off other peoples misery, but do you think its the companies fault creating a drug to prevent depression or is it us a nation not willing to deal with our own issues and can only find reassurance in a drug.

Can herbs help my depression

Depression in young males is very common between the ages of eighteen to twenty five, herbalist Richard Linton says that there are many herbs that can lift your mood combating depression. Oats, valerian, passion flower, rose and st johns wort are very effective in dealing with this condition.

Do anti-depressants work?

A report today from the University of Hull suggests that anti-depressants only help a small amount of severely depressed people and that many patients still remain depressed. In the Stockport area there is a waiting list to receive counselling on the NHS so many people have only one solution which is to take anti-depressants. Anti depressants increase levels of the mood changing chemical serotonin in the brain giving an uplifting feeling, though this report indicates that the effects of this pill are nothing more than a placebo.

Obesity - who's responsibility?

Istock_000000424894xsmall_2Obesity claims 30,000 lives a year costing the NHS 500million pounds a year, this is causing a rapid increase in health problems such as heart disease and diabetes. Junk food advertising is largely to blame for this problem targeting adverts around family viewing time slowly indoctrinating our nations diet.
Ant and Dec’s Saturday night take away series started – and each advert stresses it is sponsored by Bird’s Eye -advertising chicken dippers – a high fat/salt convenience food made with processed chicken. This does not promote a healthy eating product at peak family viewing time.
Turning the tide of this potential epidemic is ultimately the responsibility of the individual as each of us chooses what goes into our daily diet.

NHS Drug Bill

. Istock_000002838991xsmall
According to a news source more must be done to curb NHS spending on prescription drugs. The commons public account committee want GPs to steer away from branded drugs since they are too expensive, prescription drugs spending has almost doubled in the last ten years
The pharmaceutical industry claims new medicines are under used by the NHS,
not over prescribed, though any profit making industry would say this. With cancer
rates rising at the same rate as allopathic medicines it looks to be another profitable year for the pharmaceutical industry.

Budget cutting, Thank you Sir David

Urgent Action Required -
Threatened withdrawal of services from the
Royal London Homeopathic Hospital (RLHH)

We have heard with dismay that Camden Primary Care Trust (PCT), the body which funds your care at the RLHH is planning the almost immediate cancellation of the contract with the hospital for both current and new patients.

Many of us, as patients here, feel strongly that we must try to change this decision and so many of us will suffer if the services of this wonderful hospital are denied us.

This letter was written by patients under going Alternative treatment at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital.

Silenced voices? for us or for budget

An article written and published in December 2000 by The Prince of Wales stated that alternative medicines needs and deserved more research.
The fact that more people in the United Kingdom are turning to complementary and alternative medicine.A BBC poll showed that one in five of us opts at some time for some kind of non-conventional therapy, this prompted an investigation into its use by the House of Lords.

Seven years later and there seems to be progress? With a clinical trial on Acupuncture and its affects on breast cancer, being researched at Manchester university in evolving a hundred woman. But why so little so late, could it be the fact that pharmaceutical companies have a big say in the state of our health service i.e cost of chemo for private health.

complementary medicines aren't there to suppress emotion or feeling but to help the patient find equal balance within themselves. This can take time but once you found some ones true remedy picture you can help them for life.

We can not just blame the pharmaceutical industry, but does it really have our best interests at heart in the end a place selling a product is still a business. We have to look at this debate like this, are we in this to heal or simply make money, What's the point of researching new drugs and treatments if they are unaffordable and inaccessible by the NHS.

Citrus peel prevents against skin cancer?

Drinking hot tea with citrus peel could protect the body against skin cancer, US scientists say.

The researchers studied 450 people, half of whom had suffered a particular type of skin cancer, and quizzed them about their tea-drinking habits.

They found that those who developed skin cancer drank significantly less hot tea.0015050522142606_tn

Citrus peel in the tea was found to have more than a 70% reduced risk for skin squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), whereas black tea alone meant a 40% reduction.

Researchers Iman Hakim and Robin Harris, of the University of Arizona, hope the study will help them develop food supplements to help prevent skin cancer.

Cancer charities have welcomed the research but want further studies. Citrus peel

Tangerine peel 'kills cancer'

A compound extracted from tangerine peel can kill certain human cancer cells, research shows.

Leicester School of Pharmacy found Salvestrol Q40 was turned into a toxic compound in cancer cells, destroying them.

Salvestrol Q40 is found at higher concentrations in tangerine peel, than beneath the peel of the fruit. U16763324

The researchers suggest the modern trend to throw away peel may have contributed to a rise in some cancers.

Lead researcher Dr Hoon Tan said his work was still at an early stage, but together with his colleagues he has formed a company to investigate further the potential to develop natural anti-cancer therapies.

He said: "It is very exciting to find a compound in food that can target cancers specifically."

Is what we eat affecting our health?, a report today indicates that this is the case, and not more than a few grams of red meat a day can increase your chances of colon and bowel related cancer by twenty percent.

Colon Cancer has over 50% Fatality Rate

There are a staggering 363,000 new case of colorectal cancer every year, with an estimated 945,000 globally. More sobering is the fact that 492,000 deaths occur from this cancer each year, over 50% fatality rate.

But just last week, some giant news surfaced that revealed that humble Green Tea can stop colon cancer in its tracks.

The study, published in the journal “Carcinogenesis” just last week, came to the conclusion that we now have a means of treating and preventing colon cancer with staggering success potential.

Dr. Ala Issa from the University of South Carolina, who headed the research study said,

“Our results suggest that Green Tea specifically targets initial stages of colon carcinogenesis; the time of administration of green tea is pivotal for effective chemoprevention.”

Accupunture supports 60% of Cancer Sufferers in this Country

SCIENTISTS in Manchester are seeing if acupuncture could help beat the draining symptoms of breast cancer treatment.

Previous studies have already suggested the ancient Chinese art, which uses pins inserted at points around the body, may relieve the nausea caused by chemotherapy and even some sorts of pain. And it is estimated that as many as 60 per cent of cancer patients already use some form of complementary therapy alongside more traditional treatments.

The source of this information is from the Manchester evening news. When I read that over half the countrys cancer sufferers are using acupuncture as a way of releaving pain, though there are many people that are not given this oportunity. I hope that when this study shows that acupunture is affective then more peole can feel the benefits of this tremendous therapy.

Can 8.2 million people be wrong?

It's a mystery and a miracle: An acupuncture needle inserted in the pinkie toe changes a breech baby's position in the womb. How is this possible?
Ever since the 1970s, when this ancient Chinese tradition debuted in the U.S., Western researchers have sought to understand the phenomenon of acupuncture.

But the American public hasn't waited for the scientific answers. Growing numbers have sought out acupuncturists for chronic health problems -- when conventional medicine either hasn't worked nor has answers. According to the 2002 National Health Interview Survey, an estimated 8.2 million American adults have used acupuncture -- an impressive number considering only an estimated 2.1 million American adults had used acupuncture in the year before.

This astonishing fact can be proved by the many articles Jeanie Lerche Davis has written. Jeanie has devoted many years of her life writing about the truth and fact behind the world of Alternative therapies.
