Costs of Stress in the Workplace:

  •  Stress, anxiety and depression is now the single biggest cause of sickness absence in the UK
  • 46% of employers have reported an increase in stress-related absence within the workplace
  • The estimated cost of sickness absence to the British economy is  around 12 billion pounds per year

This equates to approximately 1600 pounds per employee.

Growing knife culture

The number of killings in which both victim and assailant were under 18 has jumped from 12 in 2005 to 37 last year, according to a new study.

The research paints a picture of a country where youth-on-youth violence is spiralling as the Government struggles to rein back the increasing number of children turning to gangs and falling into a life of drugs.
Though all behaviour is learnt, and it is how we educate our youth in life skills and how to survive in a violent society. Most young people who have answered the question why do you carry a weapon mostly say "for their own protection". There seems to be a knife culture growing within our society. through self protection training an individual has the chance to improve upon their knowledge and understanding of confrontational situations and in doing so will be far better placed to better control themselves in any potentially dangerous situation they experience thus increasing the possibilities of an non violent outcome in such situations. The increased levels of awareness and self confidence  can often lead to a corresponding reduction in violent and aggressive behaviour.

Copper stopping infection

Clostridium difficile bacteria are present in our body as normal flora and without any harm. These bacteria become pathogen when the person uses antibiotics to treat any infection. These antibiotics kill the bacteria but provide opportunity to C.difficile to grow as pathogen. That is why antibiotics are not recommended to treat C. Difficile. This infectious disease is being spread around hospitals constantly, without nurses being assigned to isolation wards there is still a threat of repeat infection. There seems to be no cases of C.Diffiicile within the private sector so what is going wrong within our NHS hospitals. Before we spend more money on a scheme using copper plating to reduce the spreading of infection within wards, can’t we look at any other preventative methods?

Obama using NLP?

Obama Neuro linguistic Programming is a very powerful technique, when used right it can influence opinion and change a persons perception through the use of key words. It has been noticed that Barak Obama has used such techniques in key speeches, within a five hundred word speech it suggested that Obama used sixty percent of specific language patterns, which is a strong way of making your audience absorb information.Similalry the use of NLP in therapy can also help individuals to change negative emotions and beliefs arising from past experiences. This is acheived through the use of techniques and patterns that are driven by the unconscious mind and therefore become a way of life.

Business Depression

In the grip of the credit crunch impacting on our day to day lives many families are now struggling with the increased demands on their domestic overheads. This has thereby forced many workers to extend their working hours or take additional jobs on board to help meet their increasing overheads. Many families have had to make significant cut backs in their spending and this has greatly impacted on their quality of lives. Long working hours and increased stress is believed to have a direct impact on reducing such individuals health, resulting in Depression and chronic illness.

Symptoms of depression are: changes in mood, with sadness, indifference to things that are usually pleasure, decrease in the usual level of functioning, and often, there are changes in functioning of the function of biological processes like sleep, appetite, energy, and sexual functioning. At times these functions decrease, at other times they will increase. Some people will have increased sleep and/or appetite; others, or at other times, will have decreased sleep and/or appetite. Researchers have concluded that homeopathy may be useful in the treatment of some patients with anxiety or depression, either as an adjunctive treatment or as a sole treatment in patients who specifically request it.(Davidson J, et.al, 1997, "Homeopathic Treatment of Depression and Anxiety", Alternative Therapies, Vol.3, No.1, January)

Benefits of vitamin C on diabetes risk

Recent research shows that a high level of vitamin C can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes….by up to sixty two percent. Beneficial levels can only be achieved by eating a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and supplementing with 1gram vitamin C each day. Vitamin C is an antioxidant which helps protect blood vessels from the damaging effects of oxidation to which we are all exposed. Oxidative stress can also disturb blood sugar levels and lead to hyperglycaemia (high blood sugar levels). It is also found to be higher in people with diabetes. The diet should include foods such as broccoli, strawberries, peppers, kiwi fruit and citrus fruit. Choose fresh or frozen vegetables and eat within a short time of purchase as levels of this protective vitamin decrease rapidly with time. Also, to preserve the vitamin, cook for a minimum amount of time and use cooking water for sauces, gravies. Other factors important in lowering diabetes risk include keeping weight within normal limits, obtaining plenty of exercise and limiting intake of high fat and sugar foods.

Improving digestion

‘You are what you eat’…………..a common saying but not entirely true.
The truth……………‘You are what you can digest and absorb’

The digestive system is key to the whole health of the body.
To help improve digestion:

• Chew food thoroughly
• Eat less wheat – often irritates the gut. Choose rye bread, corn products, oatcakes, oat flakes, brown basmati rice and wheat free noodles and pasta
• Eat less refined foods and sugar – encourage multiplication of bacteria in the gut
• Increase fibre-rich foods – fruit, vegetables and whole grains
• Take live probiotic natural yoghurt every day – encourages growth of healthy bacteria in the gut.
• Supplement with digestive enzymes and probiotics – take for minimum of 1 month following stomach upset, antibiotics, indigestion or long term use of the pill or HRT

Hidden allergies and weight loss

Food intolerance can lead to weight gain, despite following a low calorie diet.
If you are intolerant to a certain food, the body produces the antibody IgG which in turn increases inflammation in the body. This then causes water retention and bloating in addition to other signs of food intolerance such as headaches, aching joints and IBS. Wheat, dairy products and sugar, eaten frequently cause a ‘feel good’ factor in the body so we tend to eat more of them – but they are some of the worst for causing inflammation and weight gain.

Statins in children

American academy of paediatricians is recommending that children as young as eight should be prescribed statins for cholesterol and obesity to prevent heart disease in later life. The idea has been backed by some UK doctors.

However statins carry side effects on liver function and muscle pain and weakness which could be damaging on developing body.
Correct nutritional advice and simple, safe herbal supplement can lower cholesterol and reduce weight for someone of any age allowing natural development for children and lowering the risk of cardiac problems in later life.
