Statins in children

American academy of paediatricians is recommending that children as young as eight should be prescribed statins for cholesterol and obesity to prevent heart disease in later life. The idea has been backed by some UK doctors.

However statins carry side effects on liver function and muscle pain and weakness which could be damaging on developing body.
Correct nutritional advice and simple, safe herbal supplement can lower cholesterol and reduce weight for someone of any age allowing natural development for children and lowering the risk of cardiac problems in later life.

Self hypnosis to control pain

Anyone is capable of using self-hypnosis to control pain if they train their mind.
This statement came from a lady who had gone through a routine knee surgery without the use of anaesthetic, instead she used self-hypnosis to control her pain. If we all could have this option we would not have to pollute our bodies with opiate based medication that is hard on the kidneys and liver.

Herbs fight cancer

A herbal extract named Triphala made of fruits from three different plants that are dried and made into a powder has cancer fighting properties. The powdered herbs are taken with water and accelerate the body's natural process of apoptosis which is the way the body eliminates old and damaged cells, it believed to be particularly effective against pancreatic cancer cells.

Researcher Sanjay K. Srivastava, Ph.D from the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Medicine said that

Triphala triggered the cancerous cells to die off and significantly reduced the size of the tumors without causing any toxic side effects.

What is time line therapy

Sunset_over_shat_al_arabEveryone has there on time line although they may not be aware of it. This is how people code and store their memories and experiences and is to be the basis of personality. Negative beliefs and decisions made in the
past, whether consciously or unconsciously, can affect your behaviour in the present and the future.Time Line Therapy can help you change how you feel about negative experiences in the past. It can also help eliminate anxiety about a future event or help you to achieve future goals and ambitions.

Mystery's of acupuncture

We are told that prescription drugs and conventional medicine can only help illness, be it mental illness or physical, though more people each year are turning to alternative therapies such as acupuncture.

According to the 2002 American National Health Interview Survey, an estimated 8.2 million American adults have used acupuncture -- an impressive number considering only an estimated 2.1 million American adults had used acupuncture in the year before.

What is Esogetic Medicine?

ColoursofdarklightEsogetic stands for Esoteric-Energetic Healing. It synthesises ancient wisdom (esoteric) with latest biophysical research about how the body functions (energetic).

Finding emotional well-being

Emotional stress caused by grief, shock abandonment, disappointment or major life-changes such as moving home, can leave us drained and prone to illness. If left untreated or uncorrected, acute emotional responses can become long term or chronic. In cases of severe mental exhaustion, hep is required in order to reverse a potential downward spiral to nervous breakdown. Homeopathy can provide an excellent early intervention and when illness has become chronic, can help rebalance the mind and emotions. Homeopathy is effective in people of all ages - from children with behavioural problems and teenagers with loss of confidence, to adults going through marital breakdown or redundancy.

Homeopathy for the mind

_homeopathyIt is not only counselling that has a role to play in preventing serious mental illness. In a national survey conducted by the society of homeopaths, 87% of patients who complained of mental and emotional problems reported positive charge.

Homeopathy has been found to be as effective as prescribed drugs in the treatment of anxiety. Both the MHRA and the National Institute for health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) say GP's are prescribing too many pills for those who do not have a serious medical condition and they advise people to seek other treatments.

Dangers of dining on donors

KebabA recent sample of donor kebabs has revealed that just one can contain as much as 111g of fat – equivalent to a wine glass full of cooking oil – twice the upper daily limit. The type of fat found in the ‘deadly donor’ is saturated and hydrogenated – known to raise cholesterol levels. One kebab can also provide nearly twice the daily salt allowance. Eaten as a snack on top of an unhealthy diet and a night at the pub has serious implications for health contributing to the already escalating problem of obesity and heart disease.

It is no wonder Britons are becoming the fattest in Europe. In England fifty eight percent of women have recently been found to be overweight or obese. Both men and women take 2nd place for obesity amongst twenty nine European countries. Obesity can reduce lifespan by nine years and is linked to heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, stroke and some cancers.

Childhood obesity is also a growing concern. Making headline news today is the fact that many children as young as two years old are overweight as a result of a diet high in junk food and a lack of exercise. It is thought that in future, stomach stapling may have to be offered as a way of managing this problem.

This option may attempt to tackle the obesity problem but does not help prevent it occurring. The only way to do this is to educate parents and encourage them to feed their children healthy, freshly prepared meals; avoid junk food; limit

take-aways
and encourage regular exercise.

EU gives in to drug firms

Eu_flagYou may be aware of moves originating in the European Union to regulate and 'harmonise' all food supplements including vitamins, minerals and herbal extracts, under various 'directives' and also proposals from the 'Codex Alimentarius' commission. The latter have been presented blandly as a set of regulations designed simply to ensure the safety of consumers, and as such have received very little attention.

At the same time you may have noted recently a series of scaremongering attacks in the media on the value and safety of various food supplements, based on nothing more than selective

science
and outright lies.

These strands are closely connected. What you may not yet be aware of (because the 'authorities' want it this way) is that there is in fact a concerted worldwide movement taking place, propelled from behind the scenes by mainly German-based pharaceutical giants, to completely remove public access to most supplements containing any useful amounts of vitamins and minerals, and most herbal remedies, especially newly discovered ones.

This has ALREADY happened in places where governments have 'jumped the gun', including Germany, several Scandinavian countries, Australia (in an astoundingly cynical coup by their drugs agency, the TGA) and soon in Canada and the UK. Right now, people are being prosecuted under new laws in these countries for selling vitamin C in 200mg pills, among other 'crimes'. If allowed to expand further, Codex Alimentarius will similarly prevent public access to life enhancing supplements in all of the EC including the UK, and quite probably in the US as well under a World Trade Organisation agreement.

What will my homeopath need to know?

In order to find the right remedy for you as an individual, your homeopath will need to know all about you. A detailed understanding of who you are, along with any complaints and details of how you experience them, is needed to assess your case correctly. So anything you can tell your homeopath that is typical of who you are will help the process. Finding out about your general energy level, your past medical history and the way you live are also important. Anything you say will be treated in the strictest confidence. The initial consultation may last an hour or more.

How does Homeopathy work

Homeopathic remedies work by stimulating the body's own healing power. This stimulus will assist your own system to clear itself of any expressions of imbalance. The aim is to get you to a level of health so that eventually you will need infrequent treatment.

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathic_picIn 1796 a German doctor, Samuel Hahnemann, discovered a different approach to the cure of the sick which he called homeopathy ( from the Greek words meaning similar suffering. Like Hippocrates two thousand years earlier he realised that there were two ways of treating ill health, the way of opposites and the way of similars.

Take for example, a case of insomnia. The way of opposites, (conventional medicine or allopathy), is to treat this by giving a drug to bring on an artificial sleep. This frequently involves the use of large or regular does of drugs which can sometimes cause side effects or addiction.

The way of similars, the homeopathic way, is to give the patient a minute dose of a substance, such as coffee, which in large doses causes sleeplessness in a healthy person. Perhaps surprisingly this will enable the patient to sleep naturally.

More on: What is homeopathy?

Starting homeopathy treatment

Homeopathy is an effective and scientific system of healing which assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. It recognises that all symptoms of ill health are expressions of disharmony within the whole person and that it is the patient who needs treatment not the disease.

As a new patient, these ideas may be new to you, but homeopathy has been established for about 200 years.

Homeopathic alternatives

Certain homeopathic remedies are prepared in great dilution from tissues infected with a particular bacterium or virus. Termed nosodes, they have used in some cases to help prevent infection eg cholera nosode.

Alternatively a remedy may be used preventively which would be used to treat the illness in question eg china for malaria. Whilst the value of homeopathic remedies in the treatment of disease is well established, their value in the prevention of specific disease is not well documented. More research needs to be done to check that travellers who have found them to be effective have actually been exposed to the particular disease.

Homeopathy and Foreign Travel

Sunset_over_shat_al_arabMore than thirty million journeys are made abroad each year. They can vary from a day trip to paris, requiring no particular health safeguards, to long expedition in remote mountains needing much forward planning. In these days of fast jet travel, our bodies can be suddenly subjected to conditions they have never encountered before and to which there has been no opportunity to develop immunity.

Health risks and how to avoid them:Each journey and each traveller pose a fresh set of circumstances; there are many variables to consider. By reading further about the country you intend to visit you can prepare yourself beforehand and take precautions.

Water: If you have any doubts about the quality of the tap water, boil it or sterilise it with disinfectant tables or use bottled water from a sealed container for drinking, brushing teeth or washing food. Check that ice has been prepared from safe water.

No Jab No School says labour MP

MmrMary Creagh a labour mp suggested that any child who has not received all their vaccinations should not be allowed to start school. An attempt to increase the number of children having the controversial MMR vaccine. It is alarming that there is such suggestion of enforcing inoculation when MMR jabs are allegedly believed to cause autism in some cases.

Hayfever Help

DandilionsoAs the weather warms up many people are plagued with symptoms of hayfever – sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes.
Before resorting to antihistamines and nasal sprays there are dietary approaches that can help calm the immune system, boost immune function and help reduce potential allergic reactions.

Diet:
1 Avoid or minimise wheat, gluten (in rye, barley and oats) and yeast – highly allergenic foods
2 Avoid dairy products – increase production of mucus
3 Avoid fatty meats – aggravate inflammation
4 Increase omega 3 intake – oily fish, nuts and seeds. Helps reduce inflammation
5 Maximise nutrient intake through wide variety of fruit and vegetables
6 Drink 1-2litres water/day
7 Avoid alcohol – increases risk of allergic response and strains liver

Supplements:
Consider multivitamin, vitamin C, quercetin, glutamine, bromelain and MSM. Consult nutritional therapist for correct dosage.

Epilepsy and a high fat diet

A UK trial feeding children with epilepsy a high fat diet reduced the number of fits they experienced by a third. The diet appears to mimic the effects of starvation, change metabolism and produce ketones which help reduce seizures.
Researchers are calling for the diet to be more available on the NHS. It consists of low amounts of carbohydrate, controlled amounts of protein but a very high intake of fat.

However, such a diet is not without risks. Side effects included constipation, vomiting, lack of energy and hunger. Not to mention the long term risks of heart disease, obesity and diabetes – a growing problem amongst our childhood population, as demonstrated by Too fat to Toddle – A TV documentary highlighting the horrors of childhood obesity.

Too fat to Toddle

This TV documentary about childhood obesity is set to highlight the growing epidemic of childhood obesity in our nation. Many parents give excuses for this problem in their offspring such as

a slow metabolism
or
family genes
. However in reality, children are being fed too much of the wrong kind of foods, taking too little exercise and being rewarded with high fat, high sugar foods as treats.

Many parents are confused about food labelling and underestimate how much their children eat.
Not only do parents need educating about how to feed their children healthy foods but exercise must also be encouraged on a daily basis. Food should not be used as a reward and portion size needs to be controlled.
Such education needs to take place from birth onwards if this life threatening trend is to be reversed.
Children who are obese are statistically more likely to develop into obese adults and at risk of high cholesterol, diabetes, joint problems and high blood pressure, not to mention the social stigma and potential for bullying associated with being overweight.

How healthy is your gut?

Istock_000005009631xsmall
One in five people at any one time suffer with digestive problems. Many people, if questioned, would like to improve their digestion.

The gut is responsible for breaking down our food and absorbing nutrients needed to maintain health.
The pressures of 21st century life place a lot of strain on the digestive tract, causing many problems.

These include:

• Poor diet –high in wheat, dairy, sugar and processed foods and low in fibre

• Stress – compromises digestion and lowers the immune system

• Drugs – antibiotics upset the natural balance of bacteria in the bowel

• Heavy exercise – slows digestive function

• Ageing process – reduces levels of stomach acid needed to break down food.

Top up your tomatoes

Tomoatoe

A report in the Independent highlights the health benefits of eating tomatoes, especially cooked tomatoes.

These benefits include:

• Protection against sunburn and skin cancer

• Slows down the ageing process

It is believed the antioxidant lycopene found in higher concentrations in cooked tomatoes helps neutralise harmful free radicals which damage the skin.

So, foods such as tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, tomato ketchup and tomato soup can have health benefits.
Another well known benefit of lycopene is it helps reduce the risk of prostate cancer.

Water Intake

To maintain optimum health you should be drinking 2-3 litres of non-alcoholic fluids a day, your water quota can include such things as coffee and tea, it is a common misconception that coffee dehydrates you. Caffeine in coffee is a relatively weak diuretic and is balanced out by the water you put in it unless you drink espresso which has a higher caffeine content compared to water. So drinking up to 5 cups of coffee/tea a day can actually be good for you as caffeine also enhances your bodies ability to use fat as an energy source, on that if you exercise you should add one litre of water to your intake per hour of fitness. The diets that time forgot

This program looks at the different types of diets used in the Victorian era and some of their beneficial affects. The program involves nine dieters who have agreed to trying the weird and wonderful eating regimes used by our ancestors - under the watchful eye of historian Sir Roy Strong.
It was interesting to see how different approaches to what we eat, how we eat and what we pass out all affects our weight control which seemed to be the under-pinning factor of the program.

This was a weak strategy which was a last chance ditch to regain public confidence in our NHS,which clearly has failed.

reducing risk of osteoporosis

Impact activity reduces the risk of osteoporosis. When you do any impact activity (especially on the lower limbs) the body accumulates more minerals into the bones therefore increasing bone density. Moderate impact activity once a week can be enough to stave off the effects of osteoporosis, along with a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. For more information ask Dave Brownley a question.

The Delia Dilemma……….Fresh vs Convenience

The current TV showing of Delia Smith’s new cookery programme, ‘Cheat’s Guide to Cooking’ could have a potentially damaging effect on our health. At a time when we are being encouraged to cook using fresh ingredients, does it not seem a backwards step that a former, well respected figure in the cookery series circles is encouraging the nation to revert to convenience foods to prepare quick meals? Foods such as tinned mince and high fat ready whipped cream are amongst the foods she is cooking with. Many of these foods contain additives, preservatives, high saturated fat, sugar and salt content. These can be potentially damaging to our health and are not encouraging healthy eating – a complete contrast to the work of Jamie Oliver who is working hard to promote use of fresh ingredients both in the home and school environment.

Society is confused enough by messages published in the media and on our TV screens. This latest cookery series is at risk of compounding that confusion.

Nutrition,

Moving away from faddy, over complicated diets. Most diets in magazines and other places are complicating a very simple concept that is getting your body enough nutrients to survive, and live an active illness-free life. Calorie intake is based on the average person using 80 Calories every hour for normal daily functions, these include breathing and digestion. Also your body will not distinguish between different foods; once food has left your pallet you body only recognises SIX things, Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats, Vitamins, Minerals and Water. (Fibre as a separate item as it has little or no nutritional value, it I though essential for the health of your digestive tract). You should be aiming to eat a varied balanced diet containing about 65-70% Carbohydrates, 20-25% Protein and 5-10% Fat as a good average, and drinking 2-3 litres of non-alcoholic fluid a day.

What is kinesiology

Kinesiology can be described as the study of muscles and how the body moves, though it is also more of a diagnostic therapy, the Kinesiology Federation gives the following description.

'Kinesiology, literally the study of body movement, is a holistic approach to balancing the movement and interaction of a person's energy systems. Gentle assessment of muscle response monitors those areas where blocks and imbalances are impairing physical, emotional or energetic well -being. The same method can identify factors that may be contributing to such imbalances. The body's natural healing responses are stimulated by attention to reflex and acupressure points, and by use of specific body movements and nutritional support. These can lead to increased physical and mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.'

Epidurals stop babies breast feeding?

Epidurals are frequently given to women during labour to ease the pain of the birthing process. Up to a third of British women giving birth are routinely given epidurals in which a catheter is inserted into the spine to allow the infusion of pain-killing drugs. These deaden the nerves that relay sensations of pain from the lower body and legs.

Australian researchers
have found that a chemical fentanyl found in the pethidine anaesthetic causes problems with lactation within the first week after childbirth.

Stress management

Today more and more people are becoming aware of the importance of stress management and worklife balance in their daily in their daily lives.

However everyone experiences stress at some time, whether it be in our personal lives or our working lives. Feeling stressed is not a sign of failure, it is a normal reaction and more a sign of the times, and stress management skills are fast becoming the survival skills needed for the 21st Century.

What causes stress for one person will not necessarily cause stress for another. This depends on each individuals life experiences and coping strategies and what actually acts as the trigger for each person.

It is important to remember that it is not the event or situation that causes the stress, but how you choose to react to that event or situation. However because this choice is normally made by your unconscious mind you will not be consciously aware that you have made any choice. It is therefore useful to be able to learn how to recognise your own patterns in life, what triggers your stress patterns, and how to develop strategies to deal with it.

Nutritional deficiencies effecting mental health

An inquiry held by the Parliamentary food and health forum has released a report urging the government to invest more money into food awareness. It claims that we consume to much fatty foods, and not enough fish, whole foods, vitamins and minerals. The report also so states that to deny yourself these nutrients has detrimental effect on your mental health. As a first line of defence the NHS has started screening mental health patients to check for nutritional deficiencies.

The Difference between medical Herbalist and a orthadox doctor

The crucial difference between medical herbalists and today's orthodox doctor is, firstly, that the herbalist looks at the patient as a whole, while conventional doctors look for symptoms which enable them to diagnose and treat diseases. They see the person as the carrier of a disease, whilst the herbalist regards the patient as a diseased person, requiring a holistic treatment. Secondly, the medical herbalist is using whole plants or plant products containing active constituents, while doctors use these constituents in refined and isolated forms or synthetics.

£57 million better spent on isolation wards

So the government have a set plan, which states more infection control nurses, patient screening deep cleaning and a campaign to cut antibiotic use.

Rather than blowing £57 million on a tokenistic attempt to win back public confidence in our hospitals, why not use that money and invest it in isolation wards, where nurses assigned to that ward would enforce strict hygiene rules.

How to stop winter flu for ever!

A vaccine that could prevent against all flu out breaks, is being trialled on humans giving promising results.

Can the NHS afford indigestion

It is reported today that £100 million a year is wasted on pills to stop indigestion sufferers according to the BBC website.

Rather than handing out pills that do not eradicate the cause but just quell the problem, is there another solution?

My first choice would be my diet, what is it I am eating that is making my body behave in this manner, could it be to much gluten and sugar?

We all know that when you eat sugar it turns to yeast in your stomach and this can lead to inflammation in the stomach which can be very uncomfortable.

To defend against this you can eat plain yoghurt but not the yoghurt advertised on TV which I won't mention for legal reasons but it is full of sugar and defeats the whole purpose of taking the yoghurt in the first place.

Colonic hydrotherapy is also a very good treatment to prevent against indigestion due to it removing all toxins out of your system and cleansing the gut.

If these two methods still did not treat the indigestion problem, I would then look into Homeopathy which is based on how vaccinations work - meeting like with like, and makes the body work against the bacteria making your body stronger and less reliant on prescription drugs.

Winter vomiting - natural remedies

As our nation has fallen under a spell of stomach bugs and vomiting once again, we all wonder how these illnesses are able to spread so fast and why havn't we got a better approach to handling them.

Well there is an answer and it is called Ipicac. If you were to take Ipicac in its pure form, it would make you throw up faster than it went down.

Though when a small homoeopathic amount is placed on a sugar tablet it can alleviate any feeling of wanting to be sick.

This is one aspect of homeopathy, the acute remedy which brings instant relief to an urgent problem. There are many remedies which can be used in the same way to bring immediate relief and comfort at a time of acute need.

It seems to be a epidemic of vomiting and illness which is spreading over the country and GPs are telling patients to stay at home to quell the increase of sickness in the UK. This is covered on the BBC News website.

One step foward, ten back

As we know Alternative medicine such as homeopathy supports many of our cancer suffers in this country. I know that alternative therapies support and comfort cancer patients due to my Farther Mark Blackwell having a rare tumour which took his life six months ago. As the NHS could not afford to support my farthers treatment and did not have the up to date technology in this country to deal with his treatment, homeopathy/ alternative medicine gave him the choice of not having to load him self up on high ammounts of morphine.

This choice is starting to be available for many other suffers not just cancer related, but people who do not want to be forced to quell there problems with heavy medication. In this democracy people should have a choice, not have there choice shattered by one mans opinion playing God.

If there talking about reactions to medication prescribed by homeopaths and peoples reactions to medication made by drug companies lets look at evidence because that would very interesting.
So is Sir David feeling threatened that he might not get the same amount of funding to operate one viewed health care system, why does it have to be one or the other why can't we have both. Sir David

The World Cancer Survey

The World Cancer Research Fund survey has issued a report today and there are clear findings to link obesity, and the British drinking culture is linked to cancer.

And it states that there is a direct relation between the extent of excessive weight and alcohol intake and the likelihood of falling victim to cancer.

The survey team has not carried out new research, but has reviewed 500,000 published papers from around the world, selecting the 7,000 most relevant and distilling their findings on cancer into a single report.

Survey chair Professor Sir Michael Marmot, professor of epidemiology and public health at University College London, said he was surprised at the strength of the link it established between weight and cancer risk.

And he said there was a "very clear message" from its findings for the general population: "Firstly, as you enter adulthood, don't put on weight. Secondly, if you are already overweight, it is likely that losing weight would lower your risk."

Prof Marmot told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "One of the surprises to me - as a relative non-cancer expert - is the importance of obesity and overweight.

"We have known about obesity and overweight in relation to cardio-vascular disease and diabetes. The idea that it is strongly linked to cancer, I think, is relatively new."

The direct link between increased weight and increased cancer risk was even stronger than that linking cigarettes with cancer, he suggested.

"With smoking, we know that if you smoke you increase your risk, but most smokers in the end don't get cancer, so it's not a one-to-one relation," he explained. "With obesity and overweight, it is very clear and it is a graded phenomenon. The more overweight you are, the more obese you are, the higher the risk of cancer

Hypnosis and Hypno-psychotherapy

For over two hundred years the technique of hypnosis has been used in medicine to treat a wide range f physical, psychological and emotional disorders. It has also long been recognised that hypnosis may successfully be combined with other approaches and techniques in counselling and psychotherapy. In 1997, the united kingdom council for psychotherapy (UKCP) formally endorsed the new term, hypno-psychotherapy, as 'the branch of psychotherapy which uses hypnosis.

Using hypnotherapy we can explore the controversial issue of past life therapy. This is yet another tool which can enable the therapist to gain answers to questions arising from issues and themes from people in this life time. It can give answers to questions about relationships and gain insight into the dynamics of relationships, why you feel a strong bond with certain people and why others leave you cold.

For example as with any therapy it can be very difficult to actually get to the centre of a case, to find out what has caused someone to become anxious or trigger an anxiety state.
Under hypnosis it is possible to identify a disturbing event that occurred not in this life and work with that individual to resolve the issue.

This is a really exciting therapy which I am sure as you may or may not agree with depending on your views or what you are comfortable with can certainly have a profound effect on someone’s present life. After all to help and improve someone’s quality of life is what all practioner’s of conventional and complementary medicine are trying to achieve.

Douglas Craddock is a full time Hypnotherapist using past life regression with clients as part of the therapy he offers. Having trained extensively with one of the countries leading past life therapists he also attends intensive training weekends updating his knowledge and techniques.

Should my doctor know?

If you are receiving treatment from your doctor then it makes sense to tell him or her about your plans to have acupuncture. The acupuncture treatment may enable you to reduce or even stop taking some forms of medication, but your doctor should be consulted regarding any change of prescription.

You should always tell your acupuncturist about any medication you ae taking as this may affect your response to the acupuncture treatment.

By practicing Hypnosis daily before the birth, you are effectivly "rehearsing" or "experiacing" your perfect birth over and over again in your mnd, so that when the actual birth begins, your mind, so that when the actual birth begins, your body responds in the way you have rehearsed it (similar to techniques used by top athletes) and as nature intended. In addiction you are conditioning your body to be relaxed and calm no matter what is going on around you.

Therefore, your response duing the birth is to remain relaxed, involved and in control, being conversant and aware of the experience. Being so relaxed leaves no room for the fear and tension, which are the main causes of pain. This calm state increases your natural pain killers (endorphins) and your blood flow, make contractions more effective and so often reduces the need for interventon and the length of labour.
