Reflexology in Pregnancy and Labour

Reflexology can also be used in pre-conception care, pregnancy care and priming labour. It is effective in helping reduce the nausea in pregnancy, backache and oedema. It is also one of the top three complementary therapies recommended for use during pregnancy and pain-relief during labour.

Used during labour figures show that the birth time can be reduced and the mother recovers more quickly after birth by using Reflexology as an aid.

A full pre-treatment consultation will be taken before any Reflexology is given for all clents. A copy of these records is available for you to take away and include with your birth notes and share with your midwife and doctor.

Hundreds of mothers denied epidurals

Fotolia_3108051_S Hundreds of mothers to be are being forced to give birth without any pain relief. A daily mail investigation found that the problem at Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle has been going on for at least three months. Expectant mothers who plan to have their birth at this hospital have been told there will be no epidurals due to a lack of senior anaesthetists.

If the demand on maternity wards is so high that expectant mothers are being denied epidurals then we have to look at other forms of pain relief.

The Royal College of Midwives say that "any methods that can help calm a woman's labour fears are beneficial".

Research studies from around the world show that the use of complimentary methods results in:-

• Shorter labours.
• Reduced use of pain medication.
• Higher Apgar scores (measurement of baby's well being at birth).
• Reduced surgical delivery.
• Increase in milk flow.

It gave an increase of forty six percent in cases of children developing asthma in the ages of  six to seven. Herbal alternatives for coughs, colds, teathing etc can be given relief without the need to use paracetamol based treatments.

Reflexology for child birth

Reflexology can be extremely beneficial through the many stages of child birth,

Pregnancy is one of the most special and emotional experiences a woman can go through. Hormonal changes occur dramatically, provoking an alteration in many physiological functions. Reflexology can help restore balance in most of the cases, treating conditions symptomatically, alleviating and stimulating. These are a few examples of particular cases in which reflexology has demonstrated to be beneficial in pregnancy and as a preventative of serious conditions during labour.

• Anaemia, Anxiety,Appetite regulation
• Backache, Blood pressure regulation
• Haemorroids, Insomnia, muscular fatigue
• muscular tension, Nausea and vomiting
• Oedema
• To improve flexibility of pelvic floor

During Labour, reflexology is of great help to improve and stimulate several conditions that occur during the process, and as a consequence, helping the mother to better administrate her energies.
